Summary:

Only a true best friend can protect you from your immortal enemies . . .

Lissa Dragomir is a Moroi princess: a mortal vampire with a rare gift for harnessing the earth's magic. She must be protected at all times from Strigoi; the fiercest vampires - the ones who never die. The powerful blend of human and vampire blood that flows through Rose Hathaway, Lissa's best friend, makes her a dhampir. Rose is dedicated to a dangerous life of protecting Lissa from the Strigoi, who are hell-bent on making Lissa one of them.

After two years of freedom, Rose and Lissa are caught and dragged back to St. Vladimir's Academy, a school for vampire royalty and their guardians-to-be, hidden in the deep forests of Montana. But inside the iron gates, life is even more fraught with danger . . . and the Strigoi are always close by.

Rose and Lissa must navigate their dangerous world, confront the temptations of forbidden love, and never once let their guard down, lest the evil undead make Lissa one of them forever . . .

(Summary from Goodreads)

Review:

Vampire Academy was published over 10 years ago, and though I've only had it on my shelves for about 3 years, it still seems like I've been putting off reading it for a long time. The time for vampires seemed to have long since passed, however, lately there have been many new vampire books appearing all over Goodreads, which lead me back to this one.

COVER

Honestly, I don't like the cover and I would really like it if these books got a new cover change. That being said, I think the covers fit in with the year it was published as so many of the covers looked like this.

WORLD-BUILDING

Vampire Academy is set in modern day Montana, however it is a world where vampires exist. There are different types of vampires in this world. Moroi vampires, are mortal vampires who have to have blood to survive, however they don't live forever. Strigoi vampires are the types of vampires who never die, and are very fast and strong because of this. Dhampirs are guardians who protect the moroi vampire royalty.

Then there are the characters.

ROSE

Rose Hathaway is a dhampir which means she has a mix of human and vampire blood and has dedicated her life to protecting Lissa (a mortal vampire princess). Rose is a very independent and strong character. She is often seen as an outsider or a rebel by her peers and elders due to her independence and disregard for rules and school activities. She is best-friends with Lissa and she constantly shows how much she cares about her. I liked how despite her being very different from me, she also had many qualities that were very relatable.

LISSA

Lissa is a moroi vampire princess which means she is a mortal vampire. Lissa is popular at school partly due to her being a princess and a generally polite and people person. She is more of a rule follower than her best friend, Rose, however she still has a disregard for many school policies due to how they discriminate those who don't adhere to the administration's standard. I also really liked Lissa's character because she showed strength in different ways than Rose but in ways that also make readers admire her.

OTHER CHARACTERS

Dimitri and Christian are two of the most important side characters. Dimitri is another dhampir who is a mentor for Rose and who helps her become a better protector. Christian is another moroi vampire who is misunderstood/an outsider at school as his parents are strigoi and everyone stays away from him for fear that he will become one. Both characters are not like the stereotypical male characters that often reside in YA paranormal fiction. Instead, both are pretty normal guys who happen to be paranormal.

FRIENDSHIP/FAMILY

Lissa and Rose's friendship is probably my favorite part of this book. I love how much they cared about each other and how connected they are. Their relationship was very realistic as they didn't always agree but you could tell how much they truly supported and cared about each other.

PLOT

Vampire Academy is about Rose who is a dhampir (aka a guardian) for Lissa (a Moroi vampire princess). Rose and Lissa have been living on their own together for two years but they are then dragged back to St. Vladimir's Academy, which is the school for vampire royalty and their future guardians. I thought the plot was very unique as I haven't read any vampire books that are similar. There's also a mystery aspect and you don't know who the enemy is until the very end.

ROMANCE

The romance is between Lissa and Christian, as well as between Rose and Dimitri. Lissa and Christian are slow-burn as they become friends before they date. Rose and Dimitri are slow-burn as well as they don't formally get together in this book but there are indications that they will later on in the series. I enjoyed both relationships and liked how they didn't take over the plot or become tiring.

WRITING

Richelle Mead's writing style is easy and fluent. I liked how she doesn't dump loads of information on her readers at once, and instead lets us find out about the world and the different types of vampires throughout the entire book. The information parts of the book are balanced by witty language and sarcasm.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Vampire Academy is an interesting start to what promises to be a fun and fast-paced series. I enjoyed the characters and plot which kept me entertained until the end. I recommend it for anyone who is looking for a fast-paced paranormal read.

Weekly Recap: 6/10 - 6/16

Weekly recap is where I update you on my life, reading and watching. Plus any posts I have done or will do.

This past week wasn't very eventful. I did go to see Aladdin on Friday with a friend and I loved it. It's probably my favorite Disney live action movie as of yet. I will be writing a movie review of it that will be up this coming week.

I didn't get too much reading or writing done this week but I'm hoping to get more done in the coming week.

Now, let's get into recapping.

But the dangerous secrets they discover in doing so could have deadly ramifications reaching the highest tiers of London society.

(Summary from Goodreads)

Review:

Cindy Anstey writes some of my favorite young adult historical fiction novels. The Hummingbird Dagger is a lot different from her previous books as it is a lot slower and filled with more mystery and intrigue.

COVER

I like how the cover portrays the darker tones of the book and the mystery aspect. The use of red and black on the cover really contribute to the mystery and darker parts of the plot.

WORLD-BUILDING

The Hummingbird Dagger is historical fiction so it is of course set in our world however specifically, it is set in 1833, Regency London.

Then there are the characters.

BETH

Beth loses her memory in a carriage accident at the beginning of the book and the first name she thinks of is the name Beth so that is what everyone calls her for the majority of the book. She is an alluring character who is mysterious simply due to the fact that she doesn't have any memory of her life. She is also a very sweet and kind character who never lets herself be seen as a damsel in distress or weak in any way. She's a very strong female character who displays that strength multiple times throughout the book.

CAROLINE

Caroline is James' sister who is another strong and likable female character. She takes Beth under her wing as her companion and they quickly become close friends. Caroline is very supportive and accepting towards Beth who is someone she had never met before but she doesn't hesitate to help Beth.

JAMES

James is the love interest for Beth as well as Caroline's sister. James was very kind and protective towards Beth and Caroline throughout the story. He was also a very smart and sensitive hero that really makes you like his character.

FRIENDSHIP/FAMILY

James and Caroline's sibling relationship was very realistic. They really cared about each other and were an accurate relationship of a sibling relationship. They also have a younger sibling, Walter, who was a little bit of a troublemaker. I really liked their whole family dynamic.

PLOT

The Hummingbird Dagger is about Lord James Ellerby who witnesses a carriage accident right near his estate. Beth, who was injured in the accident, is taken to his family's manor in order to recuperate. However, when she regains consciousness, she has no memory of who she is. She calls herself Beth as it's the first name that comes to her mind and she is apparently a lady, however, the only clue to her identity is a nightmare involving a hummingbird dagger. She gains help from James and his sister in order to begin to unravel the mystery behind her identity. This book is full of mystery and intrigue and though the plot isn't super fast-paced, it still kept my interest throughout the whole thing. I was so wrapped up in trying to solve the mystery before they solved it, that I couldn't possibly be bored.

ROMANCE

The romance between James and Beth is very slow-burn which I liked. Beth doesn't know who she really is and doesn't want to fool James or Caroline. The same goes for James who doesn't want to enter into a relationship with Beth in case she's already engaged. I thought their relationship was sweet and I liked how it took a backseat to the darker tones of the plot.

WRITING

Cindy Anstey's writing is always so lyrical and sophisticated. I love how she is able to make it fit perfectly well with the time period of the piece. Some of her British words and terms are unfamiliar and yet they are easy to understand from the context. Her hard work and effort that undoubtably went into the writing of this book really shows.

FINAL THOUGHTS

The Hummingbird Dagger is a regency mystery filled with intrigue, interesting characters and a slowburn romance. I really enjoyed the mystery and the characters and I highly recommend it to fans of historical fiction and fans of Cindy Anstey's other books.

Weekly Recap: 6/3 - 6/9

Weekly recap is where I update you on my life, reading and watching. Plus any posts I have done or will do.

This week was kind of boring as I didn't do much. On Monday, I went out for smoothies and to get my nails done with some friends and on Tuesday I went to the Zoo to visit my old sponsors from my Internship last year. I did go to the library on Saturday and got a bunch of books which I am very excited about reading.

I got so much reading done this week which I'm really happy with and I also got three blogposts up which I'm really proud of.

Now, let's get into recapping.

MAY '19 WRAP-UP

Time for another wrap up!

May was a complicated month for me as I had final exams as well as moved out of college. Then I had my wisdom teeth removed near the end of the month and that was not fun at all. I'm surprisingly still recovering but I am doing so much better.

I didn't read a ton of books this month but I did enjoy most of the books that I did read.

 Anyways...

Time to talk about the books I read this month.

PHYSICAL BOOKS

The first book I read was The Afterward by E.K. Johnston.  I had such high expectations for this book and I was a little disappointed. I loved the representation that we got but I thought that the story dragged a little bit. This was about two heroes who have returned from a quest and were trying to go back to normal society. I thought the concept was pretty cool and I liked how it had two female leads but I didn't love it as much as I wanted to. I rated this one 3 Crowns.

The second book I read was The Hummingbird Dagger by Cindy Anstey. Cindy Anstey's books are some of my favorite historical fiction books. This book was about James who witnesses a carriage accident and saves a young woman who says her name is Beth, however she has no memory when she regains consciousness.  With the help of James and his sister, Caroline, Beth begins to unravel the mystery that is her life and figure out what actually happened to lead to the carriage accident. I rated this one 4 Crowns.

The third book I read was A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness. I read this in order to watch the TV show and I was very pleasantly surprised. This is about Diana Bishop who is descended from an old/distinguised line of witches. Diana is a history scholar who unwittingly calls up a bewitched alchemical manuscript from the Oxford library and she banishes the book back to the stacks as she wants nothing to do with sorcery. However, her discovery sets vampires, witches and daemons descending upon the library and herself. I loved this book a lot and ended up rating it 5 Crowns.

The fourth book I read was Furyborn by Claire Legrand. I have been trying to read this book for awhile now and I could never get into it until this month. This is about two women, centuries apart, who are fighting in a cosmic war that spans millenia. Rielle Dardenne exposes herself as one of the prophesied queens: a queen of light, and a queen of blood, when she saves her best friend from assassins. She has to go through trials to prove she's the Sun Queen or she'll be executed. A thousand years later, Eliana Ferracora is a bounty hunter for the Empire until her mother vanishes. She then joins a rebel captain to find her and discovers how terrible the evil at the empire's heart really is. I ended up really enjoying this book and rated it 4 Crowns.

The fifth book I read was Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead. I have had this book on my shelf for years and never picked it up because I thought the time to read these kinds of books had long passed, however, I picked it up this month and ended up flying through it. This book is about Lissa who is a mortal vampire princess who must be protected at all times. She's protected by her best friend, Rose. After two years of freedom, the two of them are dragged back to St. Vladimir's Academy, a school for vampire royalty and their guardians, which is hidden in Montana. However, inside there is even more danger. I rated this book 4 Crowns.

AUDIOBOOKS READ

The only audiobook that I listened to in May was The Bone Witch by Rin Chupeco. I wrote a full review of this book however it didn't go up during May but I'll link it here. I ended up really enjoying the audiobook. The narrators really helped bring the characters to life and even though the plot was pretty slow, the audiobook helped move it along. I rated it 5 Crowns.
